Gilding knives and equipment

The range of products available for using gold leaf are the expertly finished leather cushion, the gilding knife with polished stainless steel blade and brass ring; the agate stones firmly attached to the wood handle thanks to a brass ring; the gold leaf, available in 140x140mm sheets in boxes of 25 sheets, the water-based mordent size for gluing the gold leaf.

The gilding cushion is essential for gilding, especially for applying gold leaf, a very thin foil of gold metal that can be applied on any material.
The gilding knife is needed to cut the gold leaf. For an excellent result when using it, we suggest not touching the blade with your fingers otherwise it has to be degreased only with alcohol, remembering to sharpen it with extra fine grain sandpaper. A tool with agate stone point is used to press the gold leaf into the support. The highly smooth surface of the agate stone lets you fix and polish the gold leaf.

Tiziano used it in one of his famous self portraits and then advocates of Romanticism, such as William Turner and Théodore Géricault and then again the founder of the realist school of the nineteenth century Gustave Courbet, but it was with Impressionism and Expressionism that the palette knife technique came into its own. Francisco Goya and James Ensor both appreciated the quickness in applying it as it allowed them to layer the colour (without waiting for the oil paint to dry) and outline the brilliant appearance and glossiness of the canvas. The painted subject appeared more animated and alive.
